CARSON — The future of the Galaxy had the spotlight Saturday night taking on soccer’s newest famous club in Wrexham AFC in the main stadium at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Wrexham, the oldest club in Wales, rose to fame thanks to their new owners actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, continued their U.S. tour with an L.A. stop. The crowd in attendance was predominantly pro-Wrexham and the night ended to their enjoyment with a 4-0 Wrexham win in front of 10,553.

The Galaxy fielded a roster of predominantly teenagers, with the youngest checking in at 16 years old (Riley Dalgado, Nicholas Barros Schelotto and Ruben Ramos Jr.).

“The Galaxy youngsters, I thought they did well and caught us by surprise,” Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson said. “It was a bit of a wake-up call in the first half that we needed to be better. I thought in the second half, we came out with more intensity, was crisper with the ball …it was a good workout for us and we’re pleased we got some goals.”

With Galaxy II having moved out of the USL Championship and into MLS Next Pro, the challenges of playing against veterans are somewhat limited. That’s why coach Marcelo Sarvas was looking forward to this opportunity.

“The game today is very physical and when you have this big gap between 16 yards and 22-23 years, it’s not easy to match-up,” Sarvas said. “It’s a very talented group. We have a good future here.

“We had a good first half and I thought we could be ourselves, we did really well defending corners and when you’re playing against men, you have to speed of the pressing and have to be on top of your game to move the ball.”

Through the first 45 minutes the young group more than held their own, withstanding a couple of dangerous moments and creating a couple of good offensive chances going the other way.

The game went into halftime scoreless.

The second half is when the youth of Galaxy II finally succumbed to the experience of Wrexham.

In the 48th minute, Andy Cannon broke through on the scoreboard, followed by Elliot Lee in the 55th minute.

Wrexham added two more goals after from Paul Mullin and Anthony Forde.

“We had a little bit of panic after the first goal,” Sarvas said. “I wish we could have more of these games. When you play against players like this, you see how far they can go …I’m proud of them.”

The game was the second stop on Wrexham’s U.S. tour. The first was a 5-0 loss to Chelsea last Wednesday in North Carolina. Wrexham is coming off of an unforgettable season in which the club won the National League and earned a promotion to League Two, the fourth level of English Football.

“The positivity in Wrexham, you have to be there to believe it,” Parkinson said. “There were so many years of no money, no backing and operating on a shoestring, but to have Ryan and Rob come in and raise expectations, you can see everybody walks around with a spring in their step. I believe that football can transform a community and it’s been great to see that.”

The docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” chronicled the team’s plight before and after Reynolds and McElhenney took over with an 18-episode series. The series will return in September.

Wrexham heads to San Diego next week for a meeting with Manchester United.
