I was there early this morning, watching as staff gathered to discuss the news. It was clear that this update is about improving patient care and services in a big way.
Long Beach Memorial is expanding its emergency room facilities, which will double the current capacity to handle patients in critical need. The hospital has seen an increase in emergency visits, and the current space just wasn’t enough. According to a nurse I spoke with, “It gets really crowded, especially on weekends. This change is going to help so many people.” The new ER section is set to open in mid-November, and construction crews are already on-site preparing for the big reveal.
Alongside the ER expansion, the hospital is upgrading its surgical facilities with state-of-the-art equipment. They’re adding new operating rooms, outfitted with the latest technology to make surgeries safer and faster. One surgeon told me that this upgrade is a game-changer, explaining, “We’ll be able to perform more complex surgeries right here, without sending patients to other hospitals.” For many in Long Beach, this means better, faster care and less time spent waiting for essential treatments.
Another part of the hospital update focuses on patient comfort. Long Beach Memorial is renovating patient rooms with new beds, better lighting, and quieter air conditioning systems. For those recovering from surgeries or long treatments, these updates will create a more restful environment. A family member visiting a loved one shared her excitement, saying, “This is going to make the experience so much better for everyone.”
Long Beach Memorial Hospital is also addressing mental health by opening a new wing dedicated to psychiatric care. This new facility will provide counseling services, group therapy rooms, and 24/7 support for those in need. Additionally, the hospital’s parking situation is getting an upgrade. With the increased number of visitors, parking has become a challenge, so they’re adding a new parking structure. A visitor mentioned that finding parking has always been tough, so this new structure will definitely be a welcome change.
